Starcraft 3: Will It Not Be Developed by Blizzard!?

A very bold rumor has surfaced about Starcraft, and it seems that Blizzard Entertainment will no longer be behind the development!

According to MTN, a South Korean publication, the lawsuit between Nexon and Blizzard is over, and it looks like the development of the next big installment in the StarCraft series will no longer be led by Blizzard, but by Nexon. Blizzard will be working with Nexon on the new StarCraft game, which could potentially be more than just a new RTS game if Nexon really wants to shake things up.

Let’s not forget that the RTS genre is still very popular in South Korea, as is the StarCraft franchise. Moving away from the genre would be a huge risk, as gamers looking for a sequel to 2013’s Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm are likely to be looking for another RTS, not another game set in the Starcraft universe. (There was, after all, a TPS project called Starcraft: Ghost; the third-person shooter was eventually canceled!)

However, in addition to winning the rights to make a new Starcraft, Nexon also won the chance to make a mobile version of Overwatch for Japan and South Korea, which has huge potential given the explosion of mobile gaming in Asia. In either case, this would be a big loss for Blizzard, as Nexon now has the opportunity to do something very lucrative.

It will be a while before we see if Nexon is able to capitalize on the potential here, but the potential is undeniable at this stage. This will be especially true if Nexon comes up with a Starcraft that shows how far behind Blizzard is in the genre. The fact that the two companies collaborated on the game won’t matter to gamers if Nexon can prove that their influence helped make the next game a success, if it is a success… but it’s just a rumor for now!
