According to Digital Foundry’s editors, the footage is simply stunning – and yes, they mean that in the best way possible.
When Rockstar unexpectedly dropped the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, it revealed plenty about the game’s storyline and characters. Fans were impressed with the visuals, but questions arose about how the game would truly look during gameplay. Now we know: the trailer was captured on a standard PlayStation 5 — not the Pro version. Had it been recorded on the PS5 Pro, Rockstar would have made that clear. In a tweet, Rockstar confirmed that the footage included both gameplay and cutscenes in equal parts, all captured from a PlayStation 5 console.

On a PlayStation 5 Pro, the game may run more smoothly, potentially at a higher frame rate than what’s possible on the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Shortly after Rockstar’s confirmation, Digital Foundry released its own breakdown of the trailer. They noticed some aliasing and weaker visual details like hair physics, but overall, they were thrilled with how incredible the game looks—even with those minor criticisms. They did stress, however, that trailer analysis is no substitute for hands-on gameplay evaluation.
They also noted that the game is likely to launch with a 30 FPS mode only. While a 60 FPS mode might exist for PS5 Pro users, expectations should be set at 30 FPS. That’s not just due to the visual complexity Rockstar is aiming for with Grand Theft Auto VI, but also because the studio has a history of launching major titles at 30 FPS on consoles. There’s also speculation that the game might be too large for the Nintendo Switch 2 and may not be able to run on handheld PCs in any truly playable state.
Maybe we’ll be proven wrong, but until then, we know that Grand Theft Auto VI is officially set to launch on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
