MOVIE NEWS – After years of setbacks and stalled progress, fans of BioShock finally have something to smile about: the long-awaited Netflix adaptation now has a screenwriter. Justin Rhodes, known for his work on Prime Video’s Secret Level, is officially on board.
It’s been quite a while since the last entry in the BioShock franchise, and fans have been waiting patiently for either a new game or the long-discussed Netflix film adaptation to make real progress. With its blend of philosophy, dystopian beauty, and unconventional storytelling set in unforgettable places like Rapture and Columbia, this IP has always felt destined for the big screen. And now, there’s finally some movement worth reporting.
Francis Lawrence, known for directing The Long Walk and serving as the helmer of the BioShock film project since 2022, recently confirmed that a major development has occurred: Justin Rhodes has signed on to write the screenplay. Rhodes previously contributed to Prime Video’s Secret Level series and co-wrote Terminator: Dark Fate. Speaking with IGN, Lawrence revealed that a first draft already exists and that they’re currently working to refine the script, signaling that we’re still a few years away from seeing BioShock come to life on screen.
The BioShock Movie Is Finally Stirring
That said, the road hasn’t been smooth. A leadership shakeup at Netflix last year forced the creative team to revise their original plan, as confirmed by the producer at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. It was also reported that the film’s budget had been reduced, and the production continues to navigate financial constraints. “I think we’re in a good place, honestly,” said Lawrence.
Despite the complications, the adaptation is inching forward, and fans can take comfort in knowing that Lawrence and his team appear dedicated to doing justice to the iconic franchise. The director acknowledged the adaptation’s complexity, but the existence of a script and ongoing studio discussions suggest we may finally return to the depths of Rapture before long. Meanwhile, an actor has already expressed interest in taking on the leading role.
