PREVIEW – Its hyperrealistic visuals and gripping story have already made A Plague Tale a global hit, but now the series is back with a new game, and the first trailer delivers on all fronts. This time, players can expect more action than ever before, as Sophia finally steps into the spotlight. Set 15 years before the original, this ambitious prequel is already turning heads.
A leak a few hours before the official announcement may have spoiled the surprise for some, but it’s still a thrill to see the A Plague Tale universe return—this time with a completely new entry unveiled at the Xbox Showcase. What’s certain? The action is dialed up, the pace is faster, and the story jumps 15 years into the past, focusing on Sophia—one of Requiem’s most memorable characters—as the lead.
Action, Mythology, and a New Face of the Macula
So far, all we’ve seen is a striking cinematic trailer and a handful of gorgeous screenshots, but the new direction of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is already obvious: Sophia is more combative, and the gameplay has shifted clearly toward action. “We wanted to expand and explore the world of A Plague Tale with a character—Sophia—who’s very dear to our hearts, but this time from a more action-focused perspective,” said David Dedeine, one of the studio heads at Asobo. This fresh approach promises not just more intuitive and satisfying combat, but also a new manifestation of the Macula—the ancient evil that caused so many unforgettable moments in the series. Asobo says the game will introduce “new themes, places, and moments never before explored” in the franchise.
The story takes us to Minotaur Island, where Sophia will have to survive deadly trials, traverse dangerous paths, and solve clever puzzles—all while being hunted by an army. And, as always in a true Plague Tale adventure, a supernatural threat lurks in the background: this time, it’s a “terrible hidden creature” that will do everything it can to make our journey hellish.
Combat, Stealth, and Above All, Survival
While the action is front and center, don’t expect this to turn into a standard action game—stealth and survival are still key. In combat, blocking and countering will be essential, but Sophia’s full skillset remains a mystery. Beyond breathtaking landscapes, players will also solve puzzles using a new item: a stolen Minoan sphere that manipulates light to unlock secrets.
This time, Greek mythology plays a major role: not only does the Minotaur’s labyrinth appear as a setting, but the game lets us move between two distinct eras—the medieval world of A Plague Tale and the ancient times of the Minoan civilization. “Discover a new story in the A Plague Tale universe through the intertwined destinies of two heroes united by fate and the mysterious legacy of the Taint,” promises the official description. We may even encounter some of Daedalus’s inventions along the way.
Game Pass, Tension, and Dark Forces
What other mysteries does this new world hold? Asobo has already warned that a dark force will follow you throughout the adventure, so the nail-biting suspense that defined earlier games is here to stay. Publisher Focus Entertainment is eager to revive the franchise, promising that this fusion of mythology and combat will draw everyone into a brand-new adventure.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is expected to launch in 2026 for PC, Xbox Series, and PS5, and it will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
