A sharper image without sacrificing performance – that is what Sony’s console is getting thanks to the new version of its upscaling technology.
Arc Raiders is the latest game to join the list of titles supporting PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR 2, which is PlayStation’s newest-generation upscaling technology. Embark Studios confirmed that the Riven Tides update will not only bring a new map, fresh map conditions, items, enemies, an event, and cosmetic content, but will also introduce significant visual upgrades through PSSR 2 that PlayStation 5 Pro players should notice immediately.
Following the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, members of Embark’s technical team praised the improvements delivered by PSSR 2. Engine lead Robert Kihl said the upgraded PSSR brings several meaningful enhancements that PlayStation 5 Pro players will spot right away, especially in the dense, detail-heavy environments Arc Raiders is known for. Technical art director Mikael Linderholm added that the improved PSSR allows the team to deliver better image quality and greater stability while significantly reducing visual noise in the game without hurting performance, meaning players can enjoy both the game and its world with fewer distractions.
Kihl also pointed out that PSSR 2 made life considerably easier for him and the technical team, since it only required minimal fine-tuning. He described the technology as impressive, noting that it performs extremely well even when dealing with the highly varied and complex scenes found throughout Arc Raiders. As for the rest of the update, players can finally explore a new area called Riven Tides. This is the first major new content the game has received in a while, and it will likely trigger a wave of returning players who stepped away in recent months.
A new Arc enemy called the Arc Turbine is entering the fight, and a new map condition named Beachcombing is also being added. Two new items are on the way as well, the Powered Descender and the Crash Mat, both designed to ease the vertical challenges raiders face when heading up to the surface. The new Last Resort event runs until May 25 and rewards players with merit points for tracking down miniature ship models. Those merit points can then be exchanged for three pages of rewards, together totaling 250 Raiders tokens.
The update is rounded out by a fresh pack of cosmetic items. Even so, players will almost certainly be happiest about finally getting a new map to dig into, because the community has been asking for new content for months.
