Storm clouds are steadily gathering over Quantic Dream’s game, and it does not look as if the French studio has much chance of clearing them away.

According to the latest rumors, the road to the release of Star Wars: Eclipse remains extremely rough. During the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Mike Straw revealed that the game is still stuck in development hell, and that NetEase may soon sell French studio Quantic Dream. Henderson added that he had already said three or four years ago that the game was in hell, presumably meaning development hell, and that the situation has not improved since.

“I can tell you one game not to expect: Star Wars Eclipse. I wouldn’t expect to see that at all. It’s in development hell. Yeah, things aren’t going well. NetEase wants to divest from Quantic Dream. I wouldn’t be surprised if Quantic Dream was sold by the end of the year, or if they announced, hey, we’re selling it, or something like that, by the end of the year or sometime in 2027. It’s not going well. I mean, it’s not going well at all. And there is frustration. There is a lot of frustration about it. So I would not expect it. I’ve been getting information that I reported on earlier this year… Quantic Dream was using a game no one knew existed to fund Star Wars: Eclipse, and that game, Spellcasters Chronicles, is now being shut down” – Straw said.

Star Wars: Eclipse was announced during The Game Awards 2021, but it quickly became clear that the project still had a very long road ahead. In March 2022, Henderson revealed that the game would not be released before 2027 or 2028. Based on the latest rumors, 2028, or even later, now seems more likely. Later that same year, NetEase confirmed its intention to acquire Quantic Dream, and completed the deal in early 2023 for around 100 million euros. Clearly, this must initially have been a project NetEase believed in. As the years passed, however, NetEase began pulling out of various companies it had invested in, while development of Star Wars: Eclipse continued to drag on.

In October 2025, Quantic Dream announced Spellcasters Chronicles, a free-to-play 3v3 MOBA. It appears that the game was meant to help fund Star Wars: Eclipse, but it failed only a few months after its Early Access debut. Now, the situation looks fairly bleak. Eclipse is reportedly set to be the studio’s first action-adventure game, with a branching story that spans multiple characters across the galaxy.
