Is This What Sauron Really Looks Like?! Fans Are (Once Again) Divided by The Rings of Power

MOVIE NEWS – Lord of the Rings fans are divided about the terrifying, “real” appearance of Sauron…

Sauron has always been a mysterious figure; a dark, deliberately shady entity that persistently threatened the lives of the characters in The Lord of the Rings. Although Tolkien wrote about the character here and there in his legendarium, we could not learn too much about him beyond a few basic features – and, of course, the list of his misdeeds. However, the mystique surrounding the Dark Lord has diminished since the Rings of Power series. At least, that’s how some fans feel.

During one of the most recent episodes, a so-called “intermediate” form of Sauron was revealed, which, although a disturbing sight, divided the fandom. This “black goo form” was labelled “unnecessary” by some TV viewers, who questioned why it was included in the series.

“Personally I felt this wasn’t necessary and could have been depicted as more magical in ways. This seems very physically tied […] To me it somehow lessened the process,” SnooSuggestions9830 posted on Reddit.

He’s not alone in his feelings – another Redditor said he had “mixed” opinions about his casting, adding: “[I] thought what they did looked cool, though I’m not sure it felt completely right for the character.”

However, other Lord of the Rings fans have questioned this argument.

Someone said: “I actually liked the black goo form. I liked the way it pooled down through the cracks, ate a rat to gain strength, and flopped its way to the surface. I don’t think something more ‘mystical’ would have been as enjoyable.”

User A_Balrog_Is_Come chimed in, adding: “I liked it. It’s established that it takes Sauron time to take a new form after one is destroyed. But we don’t know why or how which left a gap to be filled. This seems like a reasonable and tonally faithful filling of that gap for a dark spirit.”

The indecision of fans seems quite apt, considering how “mixed” reviews the Amazon series has been this season.

We can’t wait to see what other controversies the series stirs up when the next big reveal happens… like who could be the mysterious “Dark Wizard” looking for the Stranger in Rhûn?!
