Blizzard Stands Firm: Multiplayer Dungeon Stays the Same in Diablo 4, Like It or Not

“I’m absolutely going to stick to my guns.” Despite criticism, Blizzard confirms the multiplayer dungeon will remain in Diablo 4. Expansion director Brent Gibson has addressed concerns over the Dark Citadel dungeon, which cannot be completed solo.

Diablo 4 continues to spark debates across social media and within its community. With the arrival of the Vessel of Hatred expansion and ongoing seasonal updates, Blizzard has reiterated its dedication to listening to player feedback and improving the ARPG experience. However, there are some decisions that the developers refuse to backtrack on, and one in particular has stirred up frustration among fans.

The controversy centers around the Dark Citadel dungeon, which requires players to team up with at least one other person to access it. This has upset a portion of the community, as many players prefer to enjoy the game solo, free from the need to rely on friends, family, or random online companions. Brent Gibson, director of the Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred expansion, has made it crystal clear that this feature is here to stay.

It’s a polarizing choice, and Gibson didn’t shy away from defending it. “I’m absolutely going to stick to my decision. We’ve designed this dungeon in such a way that you don’t have to engage with the multiplayer content if you don’t want to,” he explained in an interview with Polygon. It’s worth noting that this multiplayer dungeon is entirely optional, with its rewards being purely cosmetic.

When asked why they included this feature, Gibson highlighted the growing segment of players who exclusively enjoy games with others. “While we have many players who prefer going solo, there’s an increasing number in the gaming industry who simply can’t imagine playing without friends or online companions,” he added. Meanwhile, Diablo 4’s seventh season will see a nerf to the Spiritualist’s power, with the update expected to roll out in January 2025.
