Star Trek: Resurgence: A Little Bit Of Spock [VIDEO]

The team of ex-Telltale developers has kept some of the legacy intact, but they’re looking to evolve the formula to a significantly higher level. With the new Star Trek game, they might do it.

Revealed at The Game Awards 2021, Star Trek: Resurgence will be a “narrative adventure game featuring dialogue choices, relationship building, and exploration.” It’s set in 2380, directly after the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies. Thanks to IGN, we can also see gameplay footage of the game, which Dramatic Labs are developing.

The studio was founded by Kevin Bruner, the former CEO of Telltale Games, and many of the studio’s employees have joined him. You can get a pretty good sense of Telltale’s style coming through in the gameplay, as you can see in the more than seven-minute video that there are three options to choose from in the dialogue on six occasions. Star Trek: Resurgence will have two playable characters, and you’ll switch between them throughout the story. It comes in one complete package, not in an episodic format.

So Star Trek: Resurgence is another significant IP, a trend with Telltale. Think of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman… but you could also say, Sam & Max. Telltale used a lot of IPs, but there was a minimal deviation in gameplay. Maybe that’s why Bruner left the studio back in the day because he felt they “needed to break out of the Telltale formula, do something different, surprise and delight people.”

Star Trek: Resurgence (which features Spock quite heavily in the video) may achieve that, as it does feel fresh while still retaining a certain sense of familiarity. And that’s an excellent place to start. The game will be released sometime this spring on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
