Images From The Freshly Cancelled Marvel MMO

The game (had it been made) could have had us join the X-Men or the Avengers.

Pixelkings was working on this game until last week, when its parent company Enad Global 7 (EG7) announced that the development of the Marvel MMO was over, leaving the work of Daybreak Games, the main development studio, to be wasted. The reasoning was: “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of the investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.”

It’s unknown when the MMO would have been released, but concept art for an earlier version of the game has been leaked. In November, six months ago, EG7 confirmed that their unannounced MMORPG was a Marvel project, as their presentation highlighted that it was based on a Marvel IP. The development was led by Jack Emmert, who previously led the development of City of Heroes and DC Universe Online.

However, some images of the game were published by Ramiro Galan, a principal designer at Pixelkings, who wrote on LinkedIn, “Emphasis was on rich and vibrant colours with stylistic tones that pay homage to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.” We don’t know what state the game was in when the project was shot down. The images show a created character who can choose which faction to join (X-Men, Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., or the Fantastic Four).

Then we could customise our character. We could have chosen a costume, which would have affected some of our stats. And at the end of the process, we would have been rewarded with a custom comic book cover (which is what Marvel is known for; it’s what the movies are based on) starring our character.

So the project is no longer going ahead. Who knows what would have happened if Microsoft had gone for the Marvel IP (we wrote about that earlier). There could have been an Xbox-exclusive MMO…
