Activision’s Toys for Bob studio recently hinted at a potential Spyro the Dragon-related announcement.

Toys for Bob is apparently planning some Spyro the Dragon-related announcement for 2023. After all, the famous purple platform mascot celebrates his 25th birthday this year. Spyro the Dragon and its sequels were among the PlayStation 1 console’s top exclusives. But the franchise lost much of its quality when the IP left Insomniac Games. Despite this, sales remained high enough for new main series StD games to be released yearly until 2008.

The series went on hiatus after The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, only to be pushed by Activision’s new Skylanders franchise a few years later. While the character continued to be featured in Skylanders video games, the leading platform game franchise lay dormant until 2018. Toys for Bob then made the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy brought together the original PS1 games in a revamped collection with vastly improved graphics and gameplay enhancements, and many fans hoped it would lead to a true revival of the franchise.

No new video games or projects of any kind have been announced since Trilogy. However, a recent tweet from Toys for Bob has some fans cautiously optimistic about the franchise’s future. Toys for Bob recently released an image that hints at what the studio has in store for the new year. The image references the Crash Team Rumble multiplayer game, which will be released in 2023. But it also features the little dragon ball, with the words “25th” above its head. 25. This clearly hints that some kind of announcement related to the franchise’s anniversary may be in the works.

Insiders have denied that brand-new StD games are in development. So fans may not want to get too excited that this will lead to the unveiling of Spyro 4. It’s possible that Toys for Bob isn’t referring to the announcement of a new game at all. If anything, it could simply be a port of the Reignited Trilogy to PS5 and Xbox Series X platforms.

It may be that an official new Spyro the Dragon game or a port of an older title in the franchise will be unveiled in 2023, but there is some evidence that Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure could return.

According to Activision’s leaked surveys, the company is looking to release a Skylanders collection that would collect the first three games in the series in one package. Users would no longer need to collect actual games to play the game. Though it might not be the big comeback fans are hoping for. At least there is more evidence that the project exists than any other Spyro the Dragon game.
