In an interview, Diablo IV’s lead class designer Adam Jackson explained how the game’s class design leaves room for future additions. And lead developer Joe Piepiora recently talked about the endgame.
The Diablo series has so far featured more than a dozen different character classes. Some of them are returning in Diablo IV. Meanwhile, there are some character classes from the series that haven’t reappeared since Diablo II, such as the spear-wielding Amazon. Longtime fans of the series may have a particular class or playstyle they really like. It can be disappointing to find that your favourite class is not present in the latest instalment.
Since Diablo IV’s build customization is much more detailed and open to experimentation than in previous games, Adam Jackson, lead class designer for the game, was asked in a group interview if players will be able to create builds that are analogous to the play style of the classes “missing” from the list.
Jackson said that players might find some crossover opportunities. However, it is important that there is room in the game to add new classes in the future potentially.
So far, every mainline Diablo game has introduced at least one new class after launch. Future updates to Diablo Immortal are also planning to introduce new classes. It is reasonable to expect that the fourth instalment will also bring some new classes in the future. That’s why Jackson said it was important that the game’s current roster didn’t overlap too much with these potential additions.
Diablo IV’s Barbarian character might fit the “heavy fighter” archetype. But he is clearly different from the Paladin and Crusader of Diablo II and Diablo III. Adding one of these classes would complete the list without interfering with the barbarian. The same goes for previous classes such as Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter and Monk. While it’s hard to imagine Blizzard reintroducing all of the previous classes, fans can keep their fingers crossed, hoping to eventually mow down Lilith’s demonic hordes with their own favourite set.
Is Diablo IV coming to an end?
Blizzard has now revealed that its upcoming action-RPG title, Diablo IV, will not be playable forever. In fact, there will be a “pinnacle boss”, a final enemy.
In a recent interview, Joe Piepiora, the game’s Associate Game Director, shared some details about the Nightmare dungeons in Diablo IV. In particular, what happens after the player’s character reaches level 100. Piepiora says the game won’t last indefinitely. Unlike the never-ending Paragon levels of Diablo III. He shares that once players reach level 100, there will be a “top boss” encounter in the Nightmare dungeons. Players will find this extremely challenging. At this point, fans will be expected to gather their strongest gear and really master their character build to have a chance to defeat this boss.
According to Piepiora, the idea behind the boss being unveiled is to give players a particularly challenging objective to work towards after they reach level 100 in Diablo IV.
The boss is not designed to drop powerful gear. Instead, the primary intent is to give players a sense of accomplishment for what they have achieved with their character in the game. In addition to creating and mastering a solid build, players need to be familiar with the mechanics of boss fights to have a better chance of surviving the battle.
For hardcore Diablo IV players, this “pinnacle boss” will likely be an exciting addition to the title’s endgame. Beyond the post-launch DLC, aesthetic rewards and battle tokens, of course. Blizzard is expected to deliver a lot of content for the title. But the addition of such a hardcore challenge is sure to motivate fans.
