TECH NEWS – Apple is not such a mainstream brand in Hungary, but many people in the country still choose the Cupertino-based company’s products… but now some of them might regret it!
Apple has run into a very interesting situation in Hungary, where it has taken thousands of dollars from white users as a result of fake transactions. Several Hungarian publications have reported that many people have been affected by the deductions, and understandably, they are not happy about it. Especially those who had $1,500 deducted in 74 transactions in a short period of time might ask WTF? And there were signs of this as early as June 28th, so this could be a long standing problem.
Most banks are involved in the case, and many users are contacting them about Apple, but the banks are all pointing the finger at Apple. OTP went so far as to say that there were “massive, unjustified debits”. Raiffeisen’s website has this statement: “We would like to inform our customers that due to a technical problem with an external partner, some of our customers’ bank cards may have been incorrectly charged by the Apple App Store. Our colleagues have contacted Apple officials and the issue is being resolved.”
Some deductions may have been made because the user had previously subscribed to a service with Apple but canceled it, and this may not have been properly recorded by the system. The amounts deducted are the same as before, so it is likely that there was a bug in the code on Apple’s end. Users are canceling their cards so that Apple Pay does not deduct from them, but it should be stressed that this is a server-side bug on Apple’s side, not the users’ fault.
However, according to 24.hu, the problem is not with Apple Pay, as it is the Apple App Store that is affected, because the charges are made on payment methods linked to Apple ID. Therefore, the online purchase limit on cards linked to Apple ID could be a good solution, as banks are currently referring users to Apple’s customer service.
