Ubisoft Quebec changed the original concept quite a bit, so the French publisher didn’t try to copy the Ghost of Tsushima style exactly.
Originally, it was going to be controlled by a shinobi who could put on armor to strengthen himself in battle. But maybe it was a good thing that the game didn’t follow Sucker Punch’s twice-delayed Assassin’s Creed. Jonathan Dumont, the creative director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, told PCGamer about this during the publication’s studio visit:
“When you say, ‘Let’s make an Assassin’s Creed in Japan,’ the first reflex is, ‘We need a ninja,’ right? The shinobi is kind of a one-for-one with an assassin. In early prototyping, when we were looking at other archetypes, we felt like we wanted to do a samurai because it’s very iconic. But it felt a little weird. Like, why am I suddenly better and worse in combat? It doesn’t really represent what the samurai and the shinobi are when it’s the same character.
The samurai was kind of diluting the ninja a little bit, but we wanted to do the samurai. So we said, yeah, let’s have two characters. The early games were a little bit more stealth and parkour and people love that. And then from Assassin’s Creed Origins on, people really like to fight. So trying to have those two things in the game for all the fans is the goal. That’s why I call it the ultimate Assassin’s Creed game,” Dumont said.
So they tried to bring the characters together in a way that people who like the style of the older games would find something to like, and Ubisoft wanted to appeal to those who like to fight. The former would be played by the Shinobi (Naoe), the latter by the Samurai (Yasuke).
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on March 20 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, Amazon Luna and Mac. The system requirements will be quite high (we talked about this yesterday).
