The studio doesn’t want to take any risks, but who knows what the result will be… hopefully not another failure and the closure of BioWare.
We’ve already reported that Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t do as well as Electronic Arts had expected, based on their preliminary financial results. Maybe this is the reason why BioWare is not willing to continue the development of the game. They want to work on one game at a time, and the consequence is that Dragon Age 4 will not receive any DLC or add-ons. This has never happened in the history of the franchise! Mark Darrah, a BioWare veteran, talks about it in the video below. He spent 24 years as a senior producer at the studio and worked as a consultant on Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
“This is an unprecedented time for BioWare. In the slowest and most painful way possible, BioWare is discovering that it simply can’t do more than one project at a time. For the first time since 1995, maybe not even then, BioWare is working on only one project. And that is Dragon Age: The Veilguard … everybody is focused on that. It was already running at full speed, it was able to suck up every available resource [and] it had an existing infrastructure.
Right now there are no plans for DLC, there’s just Mass Effect. So everyone at BioWare is going to be working on Mass Effect… But of course Mass Effect is not ready to have a team of 250, 300 people working on it all of a sudden. BioWare, maybe for the first time ever, is able to focus on a single project … making the best Mass Effect it can. The thing that remains to be seen is whether or not BioWare will be able to get its people back when it goes looking for them … if they can be easily removed from wherever they are temporarily placed,” Darrah said.
So there will be people who will be reassigned elsewhere within Electronic Arts because Mass Effect can’t accommodate them. Hopefully this is not code for a lot of people losing their jobs!
