DOOM: The Dark Ages: Bad News for the PlayStation 5 Retail Version? [VIDEO]

Although id Software’s game launches next week and press coverage is already underway, the disc version has sparked concern.

According to PPE, a Polish publication, some players who obtained early physical copies of the new id Software title confirmed that the box explicitly says an internet connection is required for the game to run. This is because the disc contains only about 400 MB of data, meaning the full game must be downloaded first.

What makes this worse, as PPE highlights, is that Bethesda has not clarified the situation. This amounts to a waste of Blu-ray capacity (which can store up to 100 GB), and it makes the disc version essentially pointless for players without a stable internet connection. In fact, it’s possible the 400 MB merely contains license data, meaning game preservation here is as meaningful as a hungry crow caring about cleanliness.

Launch Trailer and Release Info

DOOM: The Dark Ages promises to elevate the franchise’s demon-slaying gameplay with new mechanics and aims to outperform its two immediate predecessors. It has also received its official launch trailer, the final pre-release footage common to major titles.

The game launches on Friday, May 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass for players with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. Despite being an Xbox title, it won’t be delayed on PlayStation like some previous releases.
