Digital Foundry’s final verdict: The Switch 2 is a great console, but they’re not happy with the new Nintendo console’s screen. Digital Foundry believes the Switch 2 display has several issues.
The Nintendo Switch has taken the handheld console world by storm despite its technical limitations. The Big N has proven that video games matter most in a console, so it’s sticking to that winning formula with the Nintendo Switch 2. Power, promising exclusives, DLSS technology, and a slick display should make this next-gen device another runaway success. Digital Foundry has put the Switch 2 through its paces and has a lot to say.
In their review, Digital Foundry makes it clear that while hardware experts are generally happy with the device, they’re less impressed by the new display. They praise the Switch 2’s sturdy build and the fact that it maintains a similar thickness to the original. The 7.9-inch display is brighter and more colorful thanks to 1080p resolution and DLSS support in games.
The Switch 2 Display, According to Digital Foundry
However, the Switch 2’s screen delivers inconsistent results. Digital Foundry says they’re not sold on its HDR, since the 420 nits brightness isn’t enough for a great experience. “Even more disappointing is the motion quality: the Switch 2’s LCD blurs worse than the 2017 Switch. Compared to the OLED panel, Nintendo’s choice really shows its limitations,” they note (via MyNintendoNews).
“There are also clear issues with the Switch 2’s VRR functionality. There’s no reason it shouldn’t work properly,” they explain. Digital Foundry can’t figure out why variable refresh rate isn’t working well, even though the tech supports advanced features like Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFC). They also complain about the cable length, although at least they’re replaceable. On the bright side, Eurogamer’s team highlights the solid hardware, especially the redesigned Joy-Cons and small quality-of-life tweaks. “It’s a meaningful generational upgrade, with truly impressive efficiency.”
