The Fuss Over the Steam Deck LCD’s Batteries Has Died Down!

TECH NEWS – It looked like there might be a serious problem, but then the storm clouds cleared, even though it seemed impossible.

The original Steam Deck with an LCD display was released in 2022. Four years later, it seemed that Valve was gradually phasing out replacement parts for this older model. A Reddit user reached out to iFixit to inquire about the availability of a replacement battery for their Steam Deck with an LCD display. Unfortunately, iFixit replied that it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that they’ll receive any more original equipment manufacturer (OEM) batteries for this model. Another iFixit representative clarified that they haven’t decided to stop stocking these parts. Rather, Valve is just now beginning to phase out these parts and is looking for alternatives.

If the battery in your LCD Steam Deck is nearing the end of its life, the situation isn’t entirely hopeless, as iFixit says they are exploring options for aftermarket parts. Initially, the company had no confirmed timeline for when OEM or aftermarket parts would be available for the LCD model, but iFixit already sells aftermarket replacement batteries for the OLED Steam Deck. While this battery would fit inside the LCD Steam Deck’s casing, the OLED battery is not an option for technical reasons.

The cheaper LCD version of the Steam Deck is no longer available for purchase directly from Valve, as it was quietly discontinued last year. Meanwhile, the fact that replaceable batteries became unavailable four years after the launch of the handheld PC (when the device is likely starting to age and the battery capacity is beginning to decline) is still not good news. The short lifespan of these OEM replacement batteries undermines Valve’s promise that its other hardware products will be repairable.

PCGamer reached out to Valve for comment, and a company representative stated that Valve had confirmed with iFixit that the batteries would be back in stock the following week. Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, also commented on the situation: He tweeted that Valve contacted them and is sending a new shipment of Steam Deck LCD batteries. iFixit will do everything it can to continue supporting these handheld PCs.
