Square Enix’s New Approach: Simultaneous Console and PC Releases

After learning from the Final Fantasy VII remakes, Square Enix is committed to launching its future games simultaneously on both consoles and PC. According to Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the company’s upcoming IPs will align with this strategy.

The release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth appears to have shifted Square Enix’s approach to game launches. Now that the JRPG has been available on PC for a few days, it’s clear the company is gearing up for a host of upcoming titles. However, instead of focusing solely on PlayStation exclusivity, they are moving toward simultaneous releases on consoles and PC—an approach the company has deemed “inevitable.”

In an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the shift in Square Enix’s strategy. He acknowledged that the gaming industry no longer benefits from restricting games to specific hardware. “We’re no longer in an era where tying a game to a single platform guarantees greater success,” Hamaguchi explained.

He further elaborated that this realization emerged during the development of the two Final Fantasy VII remakes. “Through the Remake project, we recognized the need to move towards cross-platform development. Future IPs will follow this principle, and I personally believe simultaneous launches for consoles and PC, or at least very close release dates, are inevitable,” he said (via Genki_JPN).

Strengthening the Sony Partnership

Despite this strategic pivot, Square Enix remains on good terms with Sony. “At Square Enix, we’ve built a strong partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment, and we aim to maintain and deepen this relationship in the future,” Hamaguchi said. “In fact, Sony’s first-party titles are increasingly being released on both PlayStation 5 and PC,” he added.
