Zelda Movie Delayed: Miyamoto Pushes Back the Premiere – Here’s When Link Arrives on the Big Screen

The delay of The Legend of Zelda film has been officially announced—Miyamoto says the jump to the big screen will take more time. Shigeru Miyamoto now sets the film’s release date for May 7, 2027.

After the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has ramped up its Hollywood ambitions with a new adaptation of the legendary The Legend of Zelda series. While details remain scarce—the project is confirmed to be a live-action retelling of Link’s adventures—the production has hit a last-minute snag: the previously announced March premiere has now been pushed back by several weeks.

None other than Shigeru Miyamoto, father of Super Mario and the The Legend of Zelda saga, broke the news on X. “This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action The Legend of Zelda film to May 7, 2027,” he wrote. “This is a few weeks’ delay from our original date, and we will take this extra time to make the film as good as possible. Thank you for your patience.”

Nintendo Wants to “Make Us Smile” With the Zelda Movie

The delay is not substantial, but Nintendo has been transparent about the decision. As noted at the start of this article, the plot and cast details are still under wraps, but the company is expected to share more information over the coming months. What is clear is that the Big N is collaborating with Arad Productions Inc., with both Super Mario’s parents and Sony Pictures financing the project.

Key talent is already locked in: Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) is directing, and Derek Connolly (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) is writing the screenplay. While plenty of details remain unclear for Nintendo’s newest theatrical adventure, the company’s stated goal is to “make us smile” with The Legend of Zelda movie.
