MOVIE NEWS – Guest star Hugh Skinner, who made a surprising appearance in the third season of The Witcher series, raises questions about the future development of his character: just how closely will his persona from the games unfold – and when – in the series?
Netflix’s popular series, The Witcher, regularly teases the die-hard fans with the continuity of the world known from video games and books. As a result, a prime example in the third season is King Radovid of Redania, whom we also encounter in one of the best open-world games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, the magic-hating despot depicted in the video games significantly differs from the character that surfaced in the latest season of the series. After getting entangled in the political plots of Philippa (Cassie Clare) and Dijkstra (Graham McTavish), Jaskier (Joey Batey) crosses paths with an ambitious heir to the throne. This young prince’s figure in the series is a much more sympathetic and attractive personality, which leads to a progressively vulnerable and romantic relationship as the episodes unfold.
Skinner played Radovid with heart and empathy, which casts doubt on the character’s further appearance in The Witcher. However, in an interview with Screen Rant, he acknowledged that he is unsure if this version of Radovid will indeed remain, or if fans will see him transform into the fearsome and dangerous leader known from the game. “I don’t know if I’ll return, or what the next step will be, but I know for sure that based on earlier conversations, ‘This is just the beginning’ was the motto” – Skinner explained. “So, who knows? Perhaps the next time he returns, we’ll see a portrayal more aligned with the game, because this is the beginning of his story.”
Currently, the only aspects connecting Radovid’s character to his counterpart in the game are his name and his position as the king of Redania. At present, he doesn’t resemble the person he becomes in the games in any way. Philippa, the great sorceress in The Witcher universe, is surprised to find him skillful at political trickery. His relationship with Jaskier, which deepens throughout the season, is even more unexpected. But this is so different from the character presented in the games that fans should take Skinner’s word: this is just the beginning of the story.
There are many signs that the current Radovid character will not remain as he is. His knack for courtly intrigues is certainly a red flag, indicating that he and Jaskier may not live happily ever after. While everyone adores Jaskier and he deserves happiness, it seems unlikely that he will run away with a prince and live out their days together. Nothing ever goes as planned on The Continent, and Radovid’s fate in the games could be a good hint towards this fact. Even though Skinner doesn’t yet know the character’s trajectory, it is possible that in the third season of The Witcher, Radovid will become the cruelest character in The Witcher series.
The second part of The Witcher’s third season will air on July 27, 2023.
